Making ReEntry Welcoming
It’s no secret that recidivism rates are astronomical. There are many reasons that contribute to this problem, one of which is trauma. Prison is traumatic. Coming out of prison is traumatic. Rebuilding a life is hard. Services are disconnected and difficult to find. Transportation is difficult and expensive, even the bus. Finding a job that pays a living wage is its own battle. Finding ANYONE to hire you requires 10 times the effort of the average applicant. The challenges are many, these are just a few examples of the hurdles returning citizens face. We know, because we’ve been there.
Our ReEntry Mentorship program is a 12-month process that helps people transition by first and foremost treating them with respect, in a caring, trauma informed process, that provides holistically for the individual. We start by helping each person establish a firm foundation of basic needs, coaching them through the process of finding a place to live, finding and keeping a first job, making sure they have basics like towels and clothing appropriate for work. We connect them to supportive people and organizations who truly have their best interests at heart. In short, we welcome them home.
Once we establish a solid foundation, we begin the rebuilding process and provide the skills necessary to thrive. In an increasingly digital world, digital literacy is a mandatory part of that equation. Digital skills and career success go hand in hand, and digitally based careers are some of the most accessible, and highest paying. We provide former offenders the skills they need to be successful, create communities of support, and mentor them in a way that magnifies personal success rate, and drops recidivism.
The third step is to help each person explore career paths and create their own personal Blueprint to education and career. The final stage of the program teaches Financial Literacy, another critical component to being a successful citizen and community member.
Participants receive 1-1 mentoring and participate in weekly group meetings to share in support and learning.
